Dental Crowns
By the time patients come to see us to discuss a dental crown, they’ve usually had to live with the discomfort for a while. Often, they’ve been avoiding chewing on one side to avoid the worst of the pain, or have stopped eating their favourite foods because they’re worried about it cracking further. Whether you need a crown because old repair work is no longer structurally sound, or you’ve had a recent break, a dental crown may help. Custom-made to fit over your tooth, crowns give you extra strength and protection, while also restoring the appearance of your natural teeth. At Northcote Family Dentist, we offer both traditional and same-day dental crowns for eligible patients, allowing your crown to be designed, made, and fitted in a single appointment.

What is a Dental Crown?
A dental crown covers the entire visible part of a tooth above the gumline. It can be made from porcelain, ceramic, or porcelain-fused-to-metal, and coloured to match the colour, shape, and size of your surrounding teeth. Once it's cemented in place, a crown functions just like a normal tooth and will blend naturally with your smile.

When is a Dental Crown Needed?
Broken or fractured tooth A crown holds the remaining tooth structure together and restores its shape and strength. Severely decayed tooth When decay is too extensive for a filling, a crown protects and rebuilds the tooth. After root canal treatment Root canal-treated teeth can become brittle over time; a crown prevents fracture and seals the tooth. Worn-down teeth Teeth worn by grinding (bruxism) or acid erosion can be built back up and protected with crowns. Large or failing filling When an old filling takes up most of a tooth, a crown provides a stronger, longer-lasting solution. Dental implant restoration A crown is placed on top of a dental implant to replace a missing tooth.
FAQ for Dental Crowns
How long does a dental crown last? With good oral hygiene and regular dental check-ups, a well-made crown will often last 10-15 years or even longer. The health of the tooth underneath and the surrounding gums plays a big part in how long it lasts, which is why we do such a thorough examination during your consultation. Does getting a crown hurt? The work we do to prepare your tooth for a crown is carried out under local anaesthetic, so you won’t feel any pain during the procedure itself. Afterwards, some patients experience sensitivity or mild soreness, but this usually settles down within a day or two. How many appointments do I need? Traditional crowns usually require two appointments. The first is to prepare the tooth and fit a temporary crown while your permanent crown is made, and the second appointment is when the final crown is placed. If you choose a same-day CEREC crown, the full process can be completed in a single visit. Will my crown look natural? Yes. Modern ceramic dental crown materials resemble enamel and can be tinted to closely match the appearance of natural teeth. We take time to match the shape and shade so your crown blends in beautifully with your smile. Can a crown be placed on any tooth? Crowns can be used on most teeth, provided there is enough healthy tooth structure to support them. During your consultation, we’ll assess the tooth and recommend the most appropriate treatment option.
