Root Canal Treatment

If you’ve been told you need a root canal, you may well be expecting the worst. But thankfully, modern root canal treatment is a fairly routine procedure that relieves pain instead of causing it. At Northcote Family Dentist, we’ve carried out hundreds of root canals in our North Shore dental clinic, and as our past patients will tell you, it’s far less daunting than you might think.

Root Canal Treatment in North Shore Auckland

Root canal treatment, also known as endodontic treatment, is used to save a tooth that has become infected or badly damaged on the inside. During a root canal, we remove inflamed or infected ‘pulp’, which is what we call the bundle of soft tissue inside your tooth that contains your nerves and blood vessels. We then clean, shape, and seal the inside of the tooth to stop bacteria from returning. Finally, a dental crown is usually added to your tooth to give it more strength and protection in the future. You’ll be given a local anaesthetic during the procedure, which means you’re awake and pain-free throughout.

When is Root Canal Treatment Needed?

There are a number of reasons you might require a root canal, including those listed below. However, we’ll always discuss the treatment options available, as well as the associated costs, so you can make an informed decision about what happens next. Tooth infection Bacteria has reached the pulp, causing pain, swelling, or an abscess. Severe tooth decay Decay has spread deep into the tooth and reached the nerve. Cracked or fractured tooth A crack has exposed the pulp to bacteria and infection. Damaged pulp from an injury Trauma to a tooth can damage the pulp without any visible cracking. Persistent tooth pain Deep, lingering pain or sensitivity that doesn't resolve on its own.

FAQ for Root Canal Treatment

Does root canal treatment hurt? With modern anaesthetic and techniques, most patients find root canal treatment no more uncomfortable than getting a filling. Any soreness afterwards is usually mild and settles within a few days. How many appointments will I need? Most root canals are completed in one or two appointments, depending on how complex the infection is. Because we take detailed X-rays, we usually know this in advance, so we’ll share a treatment plan and timeline with you during your consultation. What happens after root canal treatment? Once the root canal is complete, a crown is usually placed over the tooth to protect it and allow you to use it again. We’ll discuss the restoration options based on the condition and position of your tooth. How long does a treated tooth last? With the right care and a well-fitted crown, a root canal-treated tooth can last a lifetime. Regular check-ups and good oral hygiene play a big part in long-term success, which we’ll discuss with you as part of your aftercare. Is extraction a better option than a root canal? While extraction is a lower-cost option in the short-term, wherever possible, we recommend our patients keep their natural tooth. Root canal treatment keeps neighbouring teeth from shifting, which helps maintain your bite. It can also avoid the additional costs and treatment of replacements like implants or bridges.
